Have a happy half term - top 3 picks

Written by Ginny Kay on

What to do with the children during this first school holiday of the year - why not pop down to Dorset? There is plenty going on for all ages. See some of our top 3 picks below:

1. Get Adventurous With Nature

Visit lovely Brownsea Island, a National Trust Property in Poole Harbour. Here children can make the most of the natural play area with loads of obstacles and try out the new pine cone shy, all this has been created by the Rangers. Children will have fun exploring and learning about the nature and animal inhabitants of the Island.

Boats to Brownsea Island leave Sandbanks and Poole Harbour.

2. Burngate Stone Carving Centre

Burngate Stone Carving Centre is on the outskirts of the Village of Langton Matravers and provides stone carving skills for people of all ages and abilities - whatever the weather. They offer children and family stone carving sessions (children must be over 6 years). Here you learn the basic stone carving tool techniques and create a masterpiece to take away with you. It is essential to book and prices are £15 per child and £30 for adults.

You can also visit the Centre's Exhibition of Sculpture, art and craft by local artists and enjoy a cup of tea and homemade Dorset apple cake whilst you browse!

3. The Tank Museum

This Half Term at the Tank Museum is all about Camouflage. Kids can learn how camouflage techniques are used in combat and how the soldiers take inspiration from nature whilst trying to stay hidden. You can find out how crews work and fight together, conceal and live with their vehicle. There are plenty of activities for the whole family with talks, tours and trails you can also experience the thrill of riding in a M548 tracked vehicle. It seats 16 people at one time so the whole family can jump in together.
